Makerere University is Uganda's oldest and most popular University while KIU is one of the biggest private universities in the country. UniRank, an international higher education directory and search engine featuring reviews and rankings of over 13,600 officially recognized Universities and Colleges in 200 countries has published its research to answer the question of the 2021 African University Ranking of the top 200 recognized higher-education institutions in Africa. Only two Universities from Uganda were ranked among the top 100 Universities in Africa, that is; Makerere University (18th) and Kampala International University (64th). This list reflects a decline in position by Makerere University which has in previous years been ranked higher in the continent. On the other hand, KIU this year has set a precedent for all other private universities in the country. The Universities ranked pass the following criteria; being chartered, licensed and/or accredited by the appropriate higher education-related organization in each countryoffering at least four-year undergraduate degrees (bachelor degrees) or postgraduate degrees (master or doctoral degrees)delivering courses predominantly in a traditional, face-to-face, non-distance education format However, this ranking does not reflect the academic ranking of the Universities in question, instead it ranks the institutions according to their web presence and popularity. "Our aim is to provide a non-academic League Table of the top Universities in Africa based on valid, unbiased and non-influenceable web metrics provided by independent web intelligence sources rather than data submitted by the Universities themselves," uniRANK says.
