In a letter addressed to the Minister for Finance, Planning and Development dated 20 October 2021, Medical Interns have once again threatened to hold another sit-down strike after an initial strike in May this year. The Interns in the letter by the Federation for Uganda Medical Interns, a unifying body of the Intern Doctors in Uganda, expressed their dissatisfaction with the inaction and lies from the Ministry of Finance, which had promised to pass a supplementary budget to increase their salaries. The President, following their sit-down strike in May, promised an increment in their salary to 2.5 million Uganda Shillings, however, this has not happened since. "To date, there has been no response from Ministry of Finance as regards to the implementation of this (Museveni's) directive. Medical Interns received 750,000 Ugx as their net monthly pay for the months of July and August. Furthermore, we have reliably been informed that the Ministry of Finance released the usual amount of money for this new quarter and the Ministry of Health plans to pay 940,000 Ugx gross pay (750,000 Ugx Net pay) to Medical Interns for the month of September as this is what they received from the Ministry of Finance," the letter reads in part. “Medical Interns nationwide regret to inform you that we will be laying down our tools with effect from 6th November 2021 and stay home until the President’s directive is respected and implemented,” the letter added. The Ministry of Health is yet to respond to this.
