How did FDC’s Serge Tumwine win the Kyambogo guild presidency?

Serge Tumwine is a third-year Engineering student and outgoing speaker of Kyambogo University and outgoing speaker of the Guild Representative Council (GRC).

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) flag bearer Serge Tumwine won the Kyambogo University (KYU) guild presidential elections in a landslide victory yesterday. Tumwine won at every single polling station to garner 5,915 votes to take the presidency from National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Elija Mandwa who got 3,550 votes. The guild elections were held at the Kyambogo University on Wednesday, March 09.

This happened despite the fact that the top NUP leadership including Hon. Joel Senyonyi, Lewis Rubongoya, and others camped at the university for several days drumming up support for their candidate using music and everything in their arsenal. In comparison, FDC was laid back and only sent the area MP Hon. Semujju Nganda to talk to the students once. But the FDC candidate managed to win with a landslide.

This was upset because NUP candidates have been winning the guild presidency since the People Power/NUP wave started sweeping through university elections. But while NUP has been winning, there have been issues that left a bad aftertaste. For instance, in October 2019, KYU guild president, NUP’s Jonathan Tundulu was impeached for what his cabinet termed as a lack of leadership skills and mismanagement of the institution.

While this bad reputation was not yet lost on the student body, NUP fronted two candidates in the same race for this year, a move that many students perceived as disorganization on the part of NUP. But there is also a possibility that NUP is losing its appeal among young people following accusations of dubious behavior within the top brass of NUP leadership in recent months.

The other contestants in the race included another NUP candidate Masuudi Ssekanjako who scores 1,380 votes, NRM’s Wycliffe Amwesiga with 193 votes, and ANT’s Ronald Tumuramye with 193 as well.

Is NUP losing its winning streak in University politics? Is FDC regaining its lost glory? Only time will tell.
