NCHE Warns Universities Against Stopping Unvaccinated Students From Accessing Lectures

Reopening: NCHE has warned Universities against blocking unvaccinated students and lecturers from accessing lecturers.

Covid19 Vaccination

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has warned Universities and other Institutions of Higher Learning against stopping unvaccinated students and lecturers from accessing lectures ahead of their reopening.

Over the course of the past month, several Universities have come out to issue directives to their students and lecturers to get vaccinated in time, saying they will be denied access to campus and to lectures unless they are vaccinated.

The directive was issued by Universities like Islamic University In Uganda, Bugema University, Kampala University, Nkumba University to mention but a few.

However, the spokesperson of NCHE, Saul Waigolo, has advised against the decision taken by these institutions saying it isn’t fair to the students.

“The universities should first put up alternative options like opening vaccination centers at their campuses upon reopening and mobilizing students to vaccinate,” he said earlier this week.

Several Universities have done so already by offering free vaccination for both students who are only required to present a University ID. Makerere University, Uganda Christian University, Busitema, Kampala International University, Cavendish University are among the few that have implemented this.

Universities are set to open on November 1st according to a directive issued by the President. The vaccination of both students and lecturers is central to the reopening of higher institutions.

NCHE recently tasked Universities to present to it their reopening schedules and semester timetables that will implement the phased reopening as advised by the President. The education body has also asked Institutions to avail their progress updates by providing the status on staff and student vaccination and details on resumption including how progressive learning has been managed.
