Makerere University NUP Chapter releases party delegates list amidst contention

Makerere University NUP Chapter has released the party’s delegates list amidst contention from several guild aspirants and party members.

Makerere University elections

Makerere University National Unity Platform Chapter has released the full list of the party delegates in the run-up to the primaries that will pick the final candidate to represent the party in the Guild Presidential race.

The list consisted of up to 51 delegates who were selected carefully after being vetted by the party’s ad hoc committee. According to the committee, over 200 candidates had applied.

The full list of NUP Delegates can be accessed here:

The appointments have been met with opposition from some of the guild aspirants who have questioned the democracy of the whole vetting process.

Speaking on the vetting process, Yusuf Musomesa, accused NUP of having a pre-selected list of candidates even before the whole vetting process had started.

“It was simply a selection,” Musomesa said.

A one, Katonya Kisakye Ethan, argued that it didn’t make sense for the delegates to undergo a vetting process other than a democratic one decided by the people. “Who appointed the NUP chapter president?” Ethan asked.

He added that the 49 selected delegates cannot make decisions on behalf of over 4000 students at Makerere University who are part of the party, calling upon the party head of institutions Musiri David to organize a General Assembly and put the decision of choosing delegates up to all the members.

The NUP leaders at Makerere University have called for the party members not to desert it as this is when unity is most paramount.
