10 University Students who protested escalating prices get bail

The Magistrate also slapped an Shs10 million non-cash bond on the students to be paid should any of them abscond trial.

Court has finally granted bail to the last batch of 10 University Students accused of unlawful assembly for protesting the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

Buganda Road Magistrates Court gave a cash bail of 300,000 Shillings, and a non-cash bond of 15 Million Shillings to each of their sureties. This bail comes days after the first batch of five students were bailed last week on grounds that they needed to do exams.

The entire group from Kyambogo, Makerere, and MUBS universities have been jailed at Luzira Prison since a spirited protest at Parliamentary Avenue. The students tied in chains attempted marching to Parliament to petition the Speaker.

Their lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima says granting bail to his clients is a constitutional right and is necessary, considering the nature of the case.

Grade One Magistrate Sienna Owomugisha asked the students report back to Court every fortnight until their trial is concluded. She adjourned the matter to June 27, 2022.

The Magistrate has ordered the last group of 5 Students that included NUP Head of Institutions Mobilisation, Musiri David to deposit a cash bail of 300,000shs each unlike the first group of 10 Students that were released on a cash bail of 200,000shs each.

The Magistrate also slapped an Shs10 million non-cash bond on the students to be paid should any of them abscond trial.

The Magistrate further ordered their sureties to sign a non-cash bond of Shs15 million to ensure that the accused students report back to Court every fortnight until their trial is concluded.
